We have several contests for you to take part in our festival. There are special rules to each so pay close attention to better your chance of winning. 


Urban State Fair Recipe Contest

Enter your twist on a cocktail based on the theme Heaven or Hell. Please carefully read the rules below.

  1. Type in your recipe in advance for either their twist on a devil's food cake (you must use Duke's mayonnaise in your ingredient list) or your twist on pumpkin pie filling and crust (you must use Sauer's spices in the filling and the crust must be homemade).  
  2. We must receive recipes by Oct. 10.
  3. There will be a $100 cash prize for each winning recipe.
  4. Finalists will be contacted the week of Oct. 12.
  5. The finalists will compete on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 12:30 at the Urban State Fair at Sixth and Broad.

Bartender Battle Cocktail Contest


Enter your twist on a cocktail based on the theme Heaven or Hell. Please carefully read the rules below.

  1. Cocktail recipes with a title must be submitted by Oct. 3. 
  2. Cocktails must include one spirit by a Richmond-based distillery: Belle Isle Moonshine, Commonwealth Gin, Reservoir Bourbon or Whiskey or Cirrus Vodka
  3. Cocktails must include no more than six ingredients, excluding the garnish.
  4. Cocktail recipes will be judged by an outside panel and the three finalists will be chosen to compete in the Bartender's Challenge at VMFA at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31. Each round of that competition will feature a secret ingredient.
  5. The winner will receive bragging rights and a $200 cash prize. 
  6. The Bartender's Challenge competition will involve one secret ingredient for each round 
  7. Competition is open to any bartender currently working in the bar, restaurant or spirits industry in the Richmond region (city, Hanover, Henrico, Chesterfield and New Kent)
  8. Each participant shall use the official entry form online 
  9. Recipe submissions shall be original creations.
  10. Recipes shall be expressed in ounces, drops, or dashes and scaled for a single serving.
  11. Your cocktail must utilize at least one of the spirits that are locally made
  12. Recipe must include a detailed description of the garnish if there is one.
  13. All ingredients utilized should be expected to be available to most bars or easily acquired/made.
  14. All ingredients should be available year-round, so nothing too seasonal. And all ingredients should be obtainable — or should be able to be made from scratch — without undue difficulty or expense anywhere within the continental US.
  15. Cocktails made with inappropriate ingredients will be disqualified with determination of what constitutes an inappropriate ingredient he judging committee.
  16. Cocktails will be judged on originality, use of product and taste.
