In 2010, Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt published Finding Thalhimers about her search for the true story of her father’s family and the 150-year history of their department store, Thalhimers. More than 7,000 copies of the book have sold, many of them from the back of her car.
Elizabeth graduated from Collegiate School in 1994 and went on to graduate cum laude from Wake Forest University with a B.A. in Communication. In 2005, she earned a Masters in English from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Elizabeth got her professional start at branding agencies FutureBrand and Landor in New York City. Since 2001, she has run her own naming consultancy, Smartt Ideas. Elizabeth has developed corporate and product names for clients including DuPont, Electrolux, Hilton, and Cisco.
Following in the footsteps of her great-great grandmother and beloved grandmother, she currently serves as President of the Board at Jewish Family Services, which provides Home Care, Skilled Nursing Care, Counseling and Adoption services to the Richmond community. She also serves on the Barbara J. and William B. Thalhimer Jr. and Family Fund managed by The Community Foundation.
Elizabeth lives in Richmond with her husband Ryan, 7-year-old daughter Lyla, and 2-year-old son Ethan.
